4) What is an
auto-x?
Answer: These low-speed driving
skill events are popular all over the world. You compete in your own vehicle,
driving through traffic pylon marked courses on a flat paved surface. The course
is a series of curves connected by short straights, greatly resembling a
downsized road race course. The course is designed to emphasize car handling and
driver skill rather than sheer acceleration. There are different vehicle classes
for different levels of power, handling, and modifications, so that every
vehicle can be competitive. Each entrant gets at least four timed runs on each
course. As safety is a big concern here, vehicle safety inspections are
conducted and helmets are required during competition.
5) What is a
road rallye? Do I need a car?
Answer:
These events are time-speed-distance competitions held on public roads at
legal speeds. The objective is to come as close as possible to the optimal
travel time between checkpoints hidden along the the rallye route. The second,
but very important objective is to not get lost while following the coded
instructions around town! Rallyes usually begin in Zachry Lot 51.
No.
you do not need a car to be ina road rallye. Every team needs a "navigator" to
read the directions to the driver and keep another eye on the road. Many times a
driver and a navigator can be teamed up before the start of the rallye.
6) Do I have to own a sports car? Do I have to own a car at
all?
Answer: NO! You just have to have the
love for cars and enjoy every aspect of automobiles. This is a myth about
TAMSCC. You do not need a sports car. Many members have typical college cars.
Very a few of us have turbocharged 4-bangers, but the most common displacement
engine is a V8. Some memebers complete in an auto-x with trucks. There are many
types of vehicles though, such as Hondas, Miatas, and anything else someone
brings out!
7) What about wear and tear on my car?
Answer: The most common "wear" caused by an auto-x is on
the tires. Many club members have a spare set of used tires bought for ~$5.
Before the auto-x, go to Firestone or Discount to swap the good tires off for
the used ones.
8) I like to show off my car, are there any other
club events for this?
Answer: Yup! During
these events, members and often some non-members show off their vehicles. Car
Shows are staged at the Rudder Fountain area, near the MSC and Rudder Tower, on
days that our meetings are held. This is a great way to meet people and be able
to brag about your car or truck. If you are interested in showing off your ride,
contact our PR officer for more information. Also, we have, in the past, had car
shows off-campus and in conjunction with a charity fund-raiser or goods-drive
(clothes drives, etc). If you would like to have one of our car shows at your
event, please contact one of our officers.
9) Is that all the
activites?
Answer: Nope!

RX-7 pistons, BEVO hamburgers, a cup of hot fat, etc!

10) I don't have a helmet for
an auto-x, what do I do?
Answer: The club
has loaner helmets at the auto-x site. All we ask is you share them and do not
take them with you. Also, Wal-Mart sells DOT helmets for a good price.
11) I have no racing experience. Do you have a driving
class?
Answer: There is an offensive
driving course offered at the begining of each semester, and tought by a
experienced auto-x member.
